Discussion

Though physical activity was an important focus of the intervention, no significant improvements were seen. Also, the barriers identified by the participants indicate that multiple factors play complex roles for persons with SCI who engage in physical activity. Concerns about accessibility, information about fitness centers, and other resources should be addressed for any wellness programs for persons with SCI. It can also be observed that the medical establishment needs to be oriented to realizing the importance of physical activity for persons with SCI.

The study could have further explored the link between physical activity and secondary conditions. Reductions in secondary conditions could have been due to the fitness interventions during the workshops. The results on physical activity in the study also underline the importance of considering various factors such as self-efficacy, interests, nutrition, and other related health behaviors when designing a fitness program for persons with SCI. The study indicates the necessity for further research in studying the barriers and facilitating factors that play significant roles for persons with SCI to engage in physical activity.
