NCHPAD - Building Healthy Inclusive Communities

Ten female subjects from the Quebec City metropolitan area volunteered for the study. Criteria for inclusion included: 1) confirmed diagnosis of Functional Class III RA (i.e., able to perform usual self-care activities but limited in vocational and avocational activities); 2) not being in a flare-up period; 3) free of unstable cardiopulmonary disease and neurodegenerative disease; 4) no lower limb surgery during the previous 6 months; and 5) ability to ambulate over short distances with or without walking aids. Mean age of subjects was 54 years and mean duration of RA was 14 years. The majority of participants were taking anti-inflammatory drugs or remittive agents. While criterion for inclusion specified Functional Class III RA, 9 of the subjects were considered Functional Class III and 1 was considered Class II.
