The Role of Physical Activity

Physical activity is also key to Karin Korb’s journey.

"I simply continue to recognize that my health is the most important thing in my physical state; my mother always said and continues to say: 'Ohne Deine Gesundheit hasst du nichts.' Translated from German to English: 'Without your health you have nothing.' In my own fitness evolution, I've begun to make stretching a priority as well as getting enough sleep. I have always been vigilant about what I eat and tend to focus on non-processed foods (i.e. the foods that do not cause inflammation).  I've also picked up the sport of handcycling, which has been quite a tedious addition to my workout routine. However, the most important thing about doing anything new (sport, recreation) - is just to love it. If you don't, don't do it and find something that you do love. Oh...and I'm 47.”

At 55, I know all too well how this aging thing can work. Despite decades of trying to make healthy lifestyle choices most of the time, I am not immune to the changes. My joints often hurt. Weight gets harder to maintain. While I fight it, I take more prescription medications than I would like to. I am trying to find a balance in exercise that makes me feel good but doesn’t make me hurt more.

I went out the other day for a walk. A little girl in the neighborhood that sees me out often yelled, “Why are you walking instead of jogging?” I said, “Because I’m old.” She looked quizzically and responded, “Because you’re mold?” I laughed and picked up the pace. Then I thought about how lucky I am to have two beautiful, successful grown daughters and now a grandson, and to be mobile, regardless of the pace. I’m pretty confident about figuring out the physical activity part of my journey, but can I do it with grace? I’m watching women and trying to take it all in.

So what does aging gracefully mean anyway? Dictionary and Internet site definitions of “graceful” range from beautiful and well-formed, moving easily, smooth, pleasing, to polite and kind. How wonderful that one word can exude so many descriptions and emotions. How wonderful that the journey takes its personal shape for each of us. How wonderful how it all evolves.

I mentioned at the beginning of this article that I would get to the importance of activity part - that’s the exercise physiologist in me. But Karin and Ann already did it for me! While only a piece of the puzzle, for many women being and staying active feeds their bodies and minds with the nutrients they need to feel their best - gracefully. The other pieces of the puzzle are a potpourri of experiences I look forward to.
