The most advocated method for prevention, treatment and control of hypertension includes lifestyle modifications with exercise as an integral component.² Endurance training by individuals who are at high risk for developing hypertension will reduce the rise in blood pressure that occurs naturally with age as well as providing benefits to those with hypertension such as reductions of the necessary dosage of medication. An exercise program that primarily involves aerobic training among individuals with hypertension has shown an approximate 5-7 mmHg decrease in blood pressure post training.² In addition, blood pressure can be reduced for up to 22 hours after an aerobic exercise session in individuals with hypertension. Individuals with hypertension are encouraged to exercise as it remains the “cornerstone therapy and acutely reduces blood pressure for a major portion of the daytime hours”.²
