Workplace Culture


A strong lactation support in the workplace should become part of the workplace culture. Managers and Supervisors should be trained on not only what is required by law but how to encourage the use of the policy. Supporting breastfeeding in the workplace is in the best interest of not only the employee but the employer’s return on investment as well. To make this part of the culture, Cathy Carothers, president of the International Lactation Consultant Association and co-director of Every Mother Inc., recommends creating a task force. This task force can develop a plan to meet employee needs, review company policies, identify potential spaces to be used for a lactation room, and secure appropriate training for employees. Task force members could include:
Former and current breastfeeding employees
-    Lactation consultants
-    Supervisors
-    Facilities Manager
-    Public relations or marketing staff
-    Wellness Coordinator  
-    ADA Consultants
