Notes

SMART is dedicated to enhancing the physical, emotional and cognitive growth of individuals with special needs through a quality educational and recreational therapeutic horseback riding and carriage driving program.

Our students develop self-awareness, build self-confidence and improve concentration and self-discipline. Horseback riding improves posture, balance, coordination, strength and flexibility. The rider seated on a horse is gently and rhythmically moved in a manner that is similar to human walking. Improved concentration and self discipline derived from the therapy often carries over to the home and school. Students gain new incentives for learning through horses and horseback riding. Physical activity and individual accomplishment can be psychologically uplifting and rewarding to the student, thus enhancing self-esteem.

The SMART program is designed to teach horsemanship as well as riding skills, with goals and objective adapted to the individual needs of each rider.

SMART is a member of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA). NARHA is the national organization that establishes safety standards, provides continuing education, and offers networking opportunities for both individuals and its operating centers. Participation in a riding program at a NARHA member center assures the student and his/her family that they will receive the maximum benefit at the least possible risk.

Basic equipment includes both English and Western saddles and bridles. As a safety precaution, saddles are equipped with special safety stirrups and handholds. All riders are required to wear protective helmets. A mounting block or ramp is used to ensure that students are safely mounted on their horses.
