Notes

Piers Park Sailing Center (PPSC) is a community sailing facility located in an award-winning 6-acre park on East Boston's waterfront. Since 1995 the sailing center has been offering adaptive sailing lessons, memberships, racing and special programs for people with disabilities. Sailing is unique among many sports in that it is well suited for people of all levels of physical ability to enjoy for an entire lifetime along with their able-bodied friends and family. PPSC is unique in the Boston area with the only fully wheelchair-accessible sailing facility at any level of tide. An electric hoist makes transfers into and out of boats safe and easy. PPSC's fleet of 10 Sonar Class sailboats (a Paralympic Class) and two Access Dinghies (made in Australia - the only boats of this type in the northeast) were chosen for their utility for sailors of all levels and abilities.

The Adaptive Sailing Program takes advantage of these assets during summer evenings and weekends to offer a Learn-to-Sail course and Introductory Sailing Experience designed for people with disabilities. Experienced instructors and helpers make the necessary accommodations to meet the special needs of participants. PPSC has also designed special programs of various lengths for many groups: Health South Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital, The East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, The East Boston Association for Retarded Citizens, The Ivy Street School, The Perkins School for the Blind, Outdoor Explorations and Butlee Handicap Outdoor Adventures.
