Joint Forces Dance Company is an internationally-touring company based in Eugene, Oregon. JFDC's mission is: "to encourage the evolution and celebration of dance, and to cultivate a common ground for creative expression for all people, regardless of abilities, economic status, age, or race. JFDC is dedicated to working with people with and without disabilities in its choreography, teaching, and performing." Through performance, communication, and education, JFDC helps decrease the prejudice and misconceptions that inhibit diversity in the field of dance, and by extension in society in general.
One of Joint Forces' major program areas is "DanceAbility." This is a dance and creative movement method for all people, regardless of abilities or disabilities. DanceAbility is recognized world-wide as a pioneering method in building mixed-abilities communities through dance. Joint Forces Dance Co. offers month-long DanceAbility Teacher Certification courses annually, including a training every summer at the University of Oregon Dance Department. Joint Forces Artistic Director, Alito Alessi, has won the Guggenheim Fellowship and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts among other honors for his work.
Joint Forces Dance Co./DanceAbility has performed in 15 countries and for tens of thousands of children as well as adults.
