Notes

The Brendan Corporation is a non-profit, 501c(3) organization created to provide positive and confidence building experiences for youths ages 11-14 with moderate learning differences. In consort with Shearwater Sailing Club and the Annapolis Sailing School, the Brendan Corporation has hosted the Brendan Sail Training Program for Youths with Learning Differences in Annapolis, MD, for over two decades. The program aims to introduce youths with learning differences to the joys of sailing while helping them to improve their relationships with peers and build confidence and self-esteem.

The Brendan Sail Training Program is uniquely tailored to provide sail training to youths with learning differences utilizing a multi-modal instructional model. The Brendan Sail Training Program focuses on teaching the rudiments of small boat sailing with little emphasis on technical knowledge and no formal test taking. The Brendan Program focuses on teaching the rudiments of small boat sailing with little emphasis on technical knowledge and no formal test taking while providing positive, safe experiences while students learn how to sail.

Brendan's instructors are US Sailing-certified instructors and/or have experience working with students with learning differences in an educational setting. Many of our instructors are certified teachers in the area of learning disabilities. Although they all may not be experts in the fields of learning differences and/or attention disorders, they have an understanding of how these disorders manifest themselves and are familiar with best practices for providing instruction to these unique learners.

For several weeks each summer the Brendan Sail Training Program for Youths with Learning Differences runs sail training camps on the Chesapeake Bay. This year, two 2-week sessions will be held in Annapolis, MD, and one 1-week session in St. Mary's City, MD.
