Notes

The Center for Therapeutic Recreation is a nonprofit organization that provides professional, community-based recreation services and training in Southern Maine to individuals and groups, regardless of disability, as a means to improve physical and emotional health, wellness and independence.

A cornerstone to the Center's program is its therapeutic and adapted aquatics programs for children and adults with special needs. This program begins with children as young as 6 months of age and stretches through the golden years. Additional activities include a adult social recreation program which focuses on developing social skills among participants as well as an arts and crafts programs to work on the development of life long leisure activities outside of the Center's programs. These two programs help the participant learn new skills, become familiar with other activities that are available to them within their own community and how to use their free time constructively. The Center utilizes accessible community facilities such as the South Portland Municipal Pool and Reiche Pool, as well as the Center's office for it's arts and crafts and social recreation programs.
