As a certified fitness practitioner and fitness specialist at a regional medical facility, I have extended one-on-one personal training to small-group education and training. It has proven to be an effective and efficient method, especially reflecting economic trends. The main focus currently is balance training for fall prevention -- which is a natural extension of my training and client case work with persons of disability and chronic disease. My classes at the oncology cancer center and in connection with the wellness department of the hospital include instruction for Tai Chi for Arthritis, Osteoporosis, and Diabetes. Training and instruction are progressive, very safe and appropriate for various stages/levels of fitness and post-rehabilitation. Exercises can be practiced seated, standing or moving. Fears and misconceptions about exercising during treatment or recovery are alleviated. The forms are selected with safety guidelines as recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine. With regular training, external movements offer internal benefits for disease risk management, self-care and stress management toward functional fitness.
