General Description
Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge, managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, was established in 1936 to preserve choice nesting, resting and feeding habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife. Made up of approximately 6,616 acres of wetlands and 8,935 acres of uplands, most of which is still native prairie, the Refuge provides for the needs of over 263 species of birds, more than 26 species of mammals and several species of reptiles, amphibians and fish. Bowdoin lies within a great waterfowl migration corridor stretching between Canada and Mexico and tens of thousands of waterfowl and other migrating birds pass through each spring and fall.
