The National Organization on Disability (NOD) is seeking a Director of External Affairs to play a pivotal role in the organization's future by developing and implementing an external relations strategy to expand NOD's visibility and influence, and grow the organization's public and private funding base. Reporting to the President, the Director will work closely with Program Directors and an engaged and committed board comprised of national leaders in business, the military and the disability field.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A proven record of successfully developing, planning and implementing public and private sector funding strategies with measurable outcomes that have advanced organization priorities, including cultivating, soliciting and closing major gifts.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, including effective leadership teamwork, negotiation and facilitation skills. Demonstrated ability to build collaborative working relationships across various organizational levels, including demonstrated ability to motivate a team of professional program staff and work effectively with a Board of Directors.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of initiative, productivity, commitment, strategy, creativity and versatility while embracing multiple simultaneous challenging assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Exceptional analytical, writing, public speaking, program management, budgeting and policy experience.
  • Ability to quickly identify and synthesize complex issues for their relevance for the organization; ability to communicate concisely and precisely on complex issues to multiple audiences.
  • Knowledge of the disability philanthropic community is essential. Experience in political and/or public sector fundraising and government affairs is ideal.
  • Excellent judgment, tact and self-confidence in dealing with a broad range of government officials, major companies, foundations and other high-profile individuals.
  • Genuine interest in disability policy and practice, and commitment to understanding and endorsing the mission and goals of the National Organization on Disability.
  • Knowledge of print and electronic media production.
