Created by six Chicago funders whose work includes a significant commitment to the field of early childhood, the Illinois Early Childhood Fellows Program is designed to help prepare a diverse group of new leaders to advance the field of early childhood policy and systems-building. The program is accepting applications for the 2011-2013 cohort.

The program seeks applications from individuals committed to the field of early childhood. Specific qualifications include: at least five years of professional experience, at least two of which must be in early childhood; interest in public policy, advocacy, and systems-building and their impact on the lives of young children and families; and demonstrated leadership talent. Applicants with graduate degrees are preferred. People of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

Six fellows will be selected to begin their fellowship term in July 2011. Fellows are provided with a two-year paid placement with significant responsibilities in a leading public policy, advocacy, or systems-building organization. Over the course of their fellowship, fellows are mentored by early childhood leaders, learn from experts and practitioners in a bimonthly seminar, and pursue their own professional development through conferences and workshops, as well as networking with public officials, philanthropic and community leaders, agency heads, and policy experts.
