About Hi, my name is Jonathan. I am an 85 year-old retired man. I am a full-time caregiver for Mrs. Harrington who has problems with arthritis. I used to sail large boats, coach and play soccer (seven days a week under all weather conditions), jogged 5 miles every morning, and I worked as a photo journalist. During my last 18 years of working (full time until 77) I commuted from Washington DC to Detroit, where I lived in a hotel and I ate three meals a day in restaurants. I used the hotel gym and swimming pool but still gained almost 150 lbs. I was a paratrooper in the service for four years. Now, after one heart graft and valve replacement, and weighing 270 lbs I have type II diabetes and a heart pacemaker. I am lucky to be fully mobile, but I use a cane because I have a mild problem with balance. We have in the house, a Bowflex, treadmill, stationary bike all of which I do not use anymore. I rarely walk. Age and weight. If I fall or get down on my hands and knees, I cannot get up without help. I believe (hope) a structured program with specific goals will help me. My doctor encourages me to exercise, primarily to eliminate need for insulin. I still drive a car, but I have become very forgetful. Help! Today is April 5 I am happy to say that I have been getting out and about with the motivation of this 14 week program, but I have not been doing in an organized way. My first step was to take my young grandson fishing in Burke Lake. In the past few years I have remained close to home and not even walking more than just around the property (1/2 acre). At Burke Lake we must have walked pretty close to two miles, and it felt pretty good. Since then, I have tried to get out and doing some work around the house, targeting 2 to 3 hours of gardening and cleaning up. I am really not very interested in doing the structured exercises although I realize their value, especially on those bad-weather days when I do not go out. I prefer to walk and the physical labor of gardening. I wonder if anyone else feels the same way. Jonathan Please note: I registered as JonDavHarr yesterday, but had problems and had to reregister today. Of course, I was told that JonDavHarr was used so I added the numbers. I want to keep JonDavHarr, which are segments of my first, middle and last name.
