Diet plays a large part in the treatment and management of diabetes. Impaired carbohydrate metabolism is to blame for the resulting hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) which is why reducing the amount of carbohydrates consumed positively affects blood glucose levels. Working with a registered dietitian nutritionist to create a comprehensive nutrition therapy plan and receive nutrition education should be one of the first steps to treating type 2 diabetes.
