In January the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) in partnership with the deBeaumont Foundation, released the Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (WINS.) This survey, conducted in 2017, is the only nationally representative data source of the governmental public workforce. PH WINS is a national survey of state and local public health agency employees. This article covers how the WINS survey can serve as a roadmap for ensuring that the American public health system and profession should modernize to improve the health of communities in the 21st century. The WINS identified issues such as enhancing workforce skills, retaining younger public health professionals in the field, and increasing funding to do so as challenges and opportunities to keeping public health strong.
