NCHPAD Video and Book Corner: Delay the Disease: Exercise and Parkinson's

By: David Zid
Columbus Health Works Productions, LCC

David Zid is a certified personal trainer and functional fitness trainer, and the owner and president of Columbus Health Works in Columbus, Ohio. Based on routines performed with his clients with Parkinson's Disease, Delay the Disease contains detailed and illustrated exercises designed to be used as part of a weekly exercise schedule. Exercises are coded as A, B, or C based on level of difficulty. The book is divided into 8 chapters which include topics of seated exercise, walking and balance, cardiovascular exercise, strength training, facial and vocal exercises, and more. Delay the Disease contains colorful photographs of David demonstrating each move, as well as recommendations for exercise frequency, modification and how to adjust the workout as one improves. The corresponding DVD, also available for purchase, follows the same workout as that of the book. The DVD format also allows David to give additional advice and pointers on how to perform the exercise(s) and make modifications based on how one may be feeling that day, as well as contribute motivational encouragement. Consumers may find it helpful to use the DVD format of this workout to establish proper exercise form and familiarity with the workout, and then use the book independently to guide themselves in various other locations such as outdoors or while traveling.
