  14. Chair Yoga Certification Class: Chair Yoga Certification Class, Western Massachusetts, April 17-22, 2005

    In response to the growing need for chair-friendly yoga, senior Kripalu Yoga instructor Lakshmi Voelker-Binder will offer her new Teaching Chair Yoga: The Sitting Mountain Series certification class April 17-22 at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in the Berkshires Mountains of western Massachusetts.

    The five-day certification program is ideal for yoga teachers, health care providers, and yoga practitioners, and is especially applicable to those working in senior centers, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, or corporate environments. Along with instruction in meditation, breathing, and relaxation techniques, participants will learn how to adapt classical yoga asanas to the chair. Certification will enable instructors to teach a 1-hour Chair Yoga class with knowledge and confidence to a varied audience. Tuition includes a copy of the 43-page tutorial booklet and CD, Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga: The Sitting Mountain Series, and teacher’s manual.

  19. 2005 Physical Activity and Public Health Courses, Hilton Head, SC, September 13-21, 2005:

  22. Beyond Assessment: The Team Approach to Prevention and Intervention for Overweight and Obesity in Children with Developmental Disabilities, Los Angeles, CA, May 2-3, 2005:

    The goal of this conference is to bring together multidisciplinary teams of health care professionals from Title V Agencies, University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities and Medical Homes serving children with developmental disabilities and special health care needs, to promote health, prevent obesity as a secondary condition, and eliminate disparities between children with and without disabilities. Areas covered include: 1) risk factors and environmental barriers to maintaining healthy weight in children with developmental disabilities, 2) methodology and tools for conducting assessments, 3) team intervention strategies and successful models, 4) community coalition building and accessing community resources, and 5) best practices team strategies for addressing prevention and intervention in particular with children who have a developmental disability.

  26. Project Director Position Opening at the Association of University Centers on Disability:

    The Association of University Centers on Disability (AUCD) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Project Director. The candidate must provide leadership and information, and develop opportunities for the AUCD network of Centers and Programs to conduct research and education activities in the areas of disability and health in cooperation with CDC’s National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD).   28. University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Department of Disability and Human Development (DHD) Tenure-Track Faculty Position:

    UIC’s Department of Disability and Human Development seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty, assistant professor position. DHD is dedicated to the study of disability with the goal of advancement of persons with disabilities in society. Duties include developing an externally funded research program and teaching and supervising graduate students.     The National Center on Accessibility, located at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, has an immediate opening for an Accessibility Specialist.

    The Accessibility Specialist will assist the National Center on Accessibility in meeting its nationally focused agenda in the areas of technical assistance, education, and research while promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities in parks, recreation, and tourism. The Accessibility Specialist has primary responsibility for providing technical assistance to NCA customers on topics ranging from general accessibility requirements to subject-specific issues related to recreation. The Accessibility Specialist also serves as a trainer for NCA educational programs and provides assistance to ongoing research projects.
