New Resource on Supporting Wellness for Adults with Disabilities

Wellness is a rapidly growing area of focus for Americans. But for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, access to wellness activities and programs can be limited. How can we open up participation? Find out in the new publication, Impact: Feature Issue on Supporting Wellness for Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

This Impact issue helps disability service providers, fitness professionals, workplace wellness programs, faith communities, advocacy organizations, health care providers, and others ensure that opportunities to engage in wellness activities are available to individuals with disabilities. It presents wellness as touching all areas of life – physical, social, vocational, spiritual, emotional, psychological – with choice-making and inclusion as keys.

Published by the Institute on Community Integration and the Research and Training Center on Community Living, University of Minnesota, the issue is available online at http://ici.umn.edu/products/impact/291/291.pdf and http://ici.umn.edu/products/impact/291 (HTML version). For a complimentary print copy of this Impact contact the Institute's Publications Office at icipub@umn.edu or 612-624-4512.

2016 White House Easter Egg Roll

On Monday March 28, 2016, the First Family will host the 138th annual White House Easter Egg Roll. This year's theme is “Let’s Celebrate!” and more than 35,000 people will be joining us on the South Lawn for games, stories, and, of course, the traditional egg roll.

In addition to all the fun and games, the day's activities - which will include sports courts and cooking demonstrations -- will celebrate the initiatives of First Lady Michelle Obama and the contributions the Obama Administration has made to the Easter Egg Roll. In honor of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative, this year’s event will also include the first-ever White House Fun Run.

To learn more about the Easter Egg Roll visit www.WhiteHouse.gov/eastereggroll. Tune in for live streams from the South Lawn on March 28, 2016 on WhiteHouse.gov/live. You can also join the conversation online using the hashtag #LetsCelebrate and get the latest updates by checking out Let’s Move! on Twitter and Facebook.

NCHPAD iCHIP Training & National Association of Chronic Disease Director's Disability Inclusive Healthy Communities Summit

On March 8-10 2016, we hosted the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD)'s Disabilities and Healthy Communities Project Summit Training at Lakeshore Foundation. State Expert Advisors, Lead and Partner Community Coaches, NACDD, CDC, and NCHPAD staff joined together for this 3-day Summit. Day One included training on NCHPAD’s inclusive Community Health Implementation Package (iCHIP) followed by two days of Project Training. The Reaching People with Disabilities through Healthy Communities project is an exciting collaboration between the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Division of Human Development and Disability, Disability and Health Branch (DHB). The project purpose is to accelerate disability inclusion policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) improvements that increase access and opportunities for healthier eating and physical activity for people living with disabilities across community settings--with a principal focus on disability inclusion and accessibility. The five states that were funded to pilot this work include: Montana, Iowa, Ohio, Oregon, and New York. #GoInclusive with your healthy communities work!
