Updates and Upcoming Events

It has been another bustling few weeks for all of us at NCHPAD as we gear up for the end of the year.  We sent staff to the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting & Expo (APHA), as well as the Alabama Assistive Technology Expo & Conference (ALATEC).  There, they learned about all of the newest research, resources, technology, and progress regarding disability, accessibility, and inclusion, while also teaching hundreds of professionals and students about NCHPAD and how we can be of service to them all.  Additionally, we attended both the Athletics for All Task Force meeting and the Sports Diversity & Inclusion Symposium to help address issues of inclusion and access for students with disabilities of varying age and grade levels in school-based sports programs and activities.

As we head into 2014, we want to prepare you for some changes that will be coming for NCHPAD.  In particular, we want to prepare you for a newly formatted newsletter.  We strive each month to create a product that we are proud of, that provides new and important information and resources and, most importantly, that benefits you in as many ways as possible.  So with you in mind, we are going to start weekly mailings that are more focused on specific topics.  For example, one week may be dedicated to physical activity, another to nutrition, another to kids, and so on.  We will be giving you the option to choose which topics you would like to receive in the coming weeks, in hopes that we can improve upon what we already hope is an excellent reader experience.  And of course you are welcome to simply select all and continue receiving all newsletter content as we move forward.

If you have any questions about the newsletter or other upcoming changes, or want to give us your opinion on what sorts of topics and items you would like to see more of, don’t hesitate to give us a call, shoot us an email, or message us through our chat line.  We always look forward to hearing from you.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities

Study Participation Opportunity:

Participants are needed for a research study about shoulder pain. If you are age 19 to 65, have a spinal cord injury, use a manual wheelchair and have pain in one or both of your shoulders, you may qualify. Testing involves one approximately two-hour visit to Lakeshore Foundation in Birmingham, AL. If you are interested, please contact Susan Silverman at silversu@uab.edu or 205-934-9229.

Convention on the Right of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD):

This document, also known and referred to as the “Disabilities Treaty,” was created by the United Nations and modeled after the Americans with Disabilities Act. The purpose of the CRPD is to both promote and protect the basic human rights of people with disabilities. The United States is among the 160 nations who have signed the treaty; however, the Senate has yet to ratify it, making the U.S. one of 22 nations to have signed but not yet ratified.  Beginning in early November, the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations began holding new hearings on whether to consider ratification again.  We will provide information throughout the month via social media regarding this process, as well as a more thorough update in next month’s newsletter.

The CRPD can be read here:  http://templatelab.com/convention-on-the-rights-of-persons-with-disabilities/.

For additional information on the CRPD , the current movement to ratify it, the current status of that process, and more, you can use U.S International Council on Disabilities "Latest Updates and Alerts" resource located here:  http://usicd.org/index.cfm/crpdupdates
