NCHPAD - Building Healthy Inclusive Communities

From the Information Specialists' Desks

We’re not really sure when summer ended and fall began. At NCHPAD, we have been incredibly busy over the past few months traveling, presenting, training, and growing. Here are a few recent events in which we had a presence, making the time fly by as it has.

On September 23rd, we attended the United Nations High-level Meeting on Disability & Development, "Break Barriers, Open Doors." The purpose of the meeting was to reexamine the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and determine how to increase the inclusion of the over one billion people living with disabilities worldwide into MDG initiatives. One of the main focus areas was the disproportionately high rates of poverty experienced by people with disabilities, and how to lower and eliminate that rate.

In addition to the United Nations High Level Meeting on Disability and Development, NCHPAD Associate Director Amy Rauworth represented Lakeshore Foundation and the Inclusive Fitness Coalition at the UNICEF Headquarters for the Global Partnership on Children with Disabilities to discuss the rights of children with disabilities.  At the meeting, the Inclusive Fitness Coalition, along with representatives from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the Inclusive Sports Initiative, collaborated on a proposed initiative of a Task Force on Access to Health and Physical Activity.  The Task Force will promote mechanisms for cooperation and collaboration to enhance the understanding of inclusive health for children with disabilities by initially focusing on the reduction of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and the key role of physical activity.  This Huffington Post article discusses the UN High Level Meeting and also mentions the proposed Task Force.

From October 1st through the 3rd, we attended the 2013 Walking Summit in Washington, D.C. The event was hosted by Every Body Walk! and focused on how to continue to make cities and communities more walkable. We were grateful to be a part of such a wonderful event, and to have the opportunity to ensure that the topic of inclusion of all people in walking and rolling initiatives remained at the forefront of conversations and discussions.

You can see pictures from these events on our Facebook page.

American Public Health Association (APHA) Disability Section

The APHA Disability Section will soon be conducting their second year of student webinars.  The purpose of these webinars is to promote learning, to provide an opportunity for students to share their research, and to network with the leaders in the field throughout the year.

The webinars focus on disability and health, so all students within the disability section can participate. The webinar is sponsored by The Arc for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.  Previous webinar participants include academic teachers and researchers, students, doctors, dentists, therapists, Arc chapter employees, and state/local health department employees.

They are currently looking for students that would like to present their research this upcoming year. If you are a student or know of any students who might be interested in presenting, please let them know. Each presentation is 15 minutes long (three presenters per webinar) with five to 10 minutes of questions at the end.
