From the Editor's Desk: Habit for Health 21

#habit4health21

“We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
~Aristotle

Read the above quote aloud. Then read it again and again. Allow the words to create meaning in your brain as they roll off your tongue. By repeating these words over and over again you are creating a habit. If you recite this quote each morning every day for 21 days, you would begin a pattern that could last for the rest of your life.

What if every day we repeated one healthy habit? That habit could be committing to one extra hour of sleep each night. It could be drinking at least 64 ounces of water per day or intentionally moving for 10 minutes or more a day. How would our lives differ? Would we feel better?

Instead of trying to maintain New Year’s resolutions that may have already lost their luster, why not create a habit that will last forever? Several research sources say it only takes 21 days to develop a new habit.

Join NCHPAD this month in our #habit4health21 campaign to find out how healthy habits can easily be incorporated into your daily lives. Our campaign will run for 21 days beginning JANUARY 21st (January 21– February 10). Simply tweet your healthy habit using the following hashtag: #habit4health21. For example, “Walk Fido 20 minutes/day #habit4health,” “Train daily for upcoming triathlon,” or “Take 10, deep breaths b4 getting out of bed each morn. #habit4health.”

We also encourage you to tweet updates about your progress and to utilize NCHPAD’s virtual health coaches. Each week, we will pick two followers and create a featured tweet about their health habit.

We look forward to hearing about all your healthy habits and wish you the very healthiest and happiest 2013!
