At Lewes Beach, on Delaware Bay just inside Cape Henlopen, in Sussex County, Delaware the Children's Beach House operates its unique summer resident camping program for boys and girls between 6 and 13 years of age with speech, language, hearing, communication and mobility impairments. Children who come to the Beach House participate in a varied program of summer camping activities, especially planned to meet their particular needs. During their stay these boys and girls enjoy all the fun and responsibilities of group living. Waterfront activities are a major interest at the Beach House and are carried out under the supervision of qualified instructors who are certified by the American Red Cross. Arts and crafts include woodworking, painting, candle making, puppetry, ceramics, and sand sculpture. Other activities include nature education, singing and rhythms, dramatics, a camp newspaper, games, beach walks, picnics, and special trips for fun and education. Language skills development is emphasized throughout the program. Daily free play enables campers to explore their individual interests under supervision. The Children's Beach House program is fully accredited by the American Camping Association. Children must be residents of Delaware and be sufficiently ambulatory to participate in beach and waterfront activities. The Lewes Beach House Program offers two sessions for 30 children each. Parent visiting days are scheduled and conferences are held at the end of each session. Camp clothing is supplied by the Beach House. The program is administered by a qualified professional staff including a Program Coordinator, Program Director, registered nurse, speech pathologist, certified social skills counselor and ten trained program counselors. There is also a carefully selected housekeeping staff.
