First held in 1981 during the "International Year of Disabled Persons," the National Veterans Wheelchair Games promote rehabilitation, wellness, and camaraderie through intense athletic competition. The Games provide opportunities for newly disabled veterans to gain and enhance their sports skills while being exposed to other wheelchair athletes and competitors.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is committed to improving the quality of life for veterans with disabilities and fostering better health through sports competition. The spirit of the Games inspires each athlete to achieve his or her personal best - for a lifetime ! The Games are co-sponsored each year by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Generous support is also furnished by many corporate and community sponsors and veterans service organizations.
