The Triple H Equitherapy Center in Pipe Creek, Texas, provides horseback riding therapy for children and adults with mental, emotional, learning, and physical disabilities.
The Triple H is a member of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA). Established in 1969, NARHA defines standards, accredits operating centers and certifies instructors to ensure safe, high quality therapeutic riding programs. Triple H is fully insured through NARHA.
The staff develops personal goals for every rider based on individual needs. Progress is then monitored during each lesson.
For individuals with mental or emotional disabilities, Triple H uses riding and horse related activities to develop and reinforce basic life skills. Among these are self discipline, interpersonal communications, and academic fundamentals.
For individuals with physical impairments or limited mobility, horseback riding provides a rhythmic motion similar to a human walking gait. These riders can experience improved balance, muscle control, and strength. Many participants believe that their horses have helped them learn to walk again.
Volunteers are essential. In many instances, three volunteers are needed for a single rider - one horse handler to lead and two side walkers to provide hands-on assistance as necessary. All volunteers receive individual training, so experience with horses or disabilities is not required. Triple H also can use volunteers skilled in photography, administration, public speaking, and fund raising.
