Notes

Since 1979, the non-profit Project RIDE program has offered therapeutic horseback riding instruction to children and adults with special needs. Dedicated to the improvement of the rider's physical, mental, emotional and social well-being through interaction with specially trained horses and ponies.

Riders are given instruction and encouragement to test their abilities, increase their sense of balance and improve posture, self-image, coordination, mathematical and language skills.

Project R.I.D.E. is fully accredited by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA), a non-profit organization founded in 1969, which is dedicated to supporting horseback riding in a safe, educational and enjoyable manner for disabled persons. NARHA offers training seminars, provides strict standards of excellence and safety, and certifies programs and instructors to teach riding to the disabled.

Project R.I.D.E. is operated by a small and dedicated staff of professionals. However, volunteers are, and always have been, the key to the success of the program. In the riding arena, each rider may require up to three volunteers, and up to six riders may receive therapy at one time.
