Notes

Horse Play, Inc. provides the opportunity for physically and/or students with intellectual disabilities to participate in activities enjoyed by their able-bodied peers. According to research, the gait of a horse simulates the movement of the human gait (improving coordination, tone and balance). This rhythm is therapeutically beneficial to those with abnormal muscle tone caused by Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and other muscular disorders. The psychological benefits to individuals are limitless. Horses give the riders a feeling of independence and control often denied to them in other areas of their lives. Building trust, concentration and self esteem are strengths that carry over to their daily relationships. The capacity to relate to the horse, other riders, and volunteers is a key function of the program.

Located near Tullahoma, Tennessee, Horse Play, Inc., provides a recreational horseback riding program designed to improve the quality of life for individuals with physical and/or intellectual challenges. It is a nonprofit organization instituted and managed by a dedicated team of volunteers, medical professionals and horse enthusiasts. Horse Play, Inc. complies with the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association, (N.A.R.H.A.) standards and guidelines concerning safety, training equipment and instruction.
