Notes

Josephine Kernes Memorial Pool is a warm water therapy pool serving the needs of children and adults with physical, emotional, and intellectual disabilities of the Monterey Peninsula.

With warm water as a medium that supports the body and makes movement easier, each participant's program is developed for their individual needs and goals. Instruction is geared toward helping the child or adult reach his potential in range of motion, flexibility, strength, ambulation, and coordination.

The following are general categories of instruction:
  • One-to-one instruction provides for those with severe disabilities who need constant assistance with their water activities.
  • Regular instruction for those who can do some activity on their own, but are still receiving assistance with some entry or exit or some instructional assistance. All children remain at this level even though they may be independent in the water.
  • Limited instruction for those who need only a limited amount of instruction or assistance.
  • Independent pool time is for those who have been in the program and are continuing a maintenance program.
  • Arthritis Aquatics classes are offered based on a program of medically approved exercises developed by the National Arthritis Foundation.
All classes are scheduled individually for specific days and times.
