Special Olympics Indiana offers year-round sports training and athletic competition in over 21 sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, reaching nearly 12,000 athletes throughout the state. Athletes can compete at a variety of levels that accommodate a diverse range of abilities. In addition, athletes can choose to compete within the Special Olympics Unified Sports� program, which brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities of similar age and athletic ability to train and compete on the same sports teams.

Special Olympics Indiana offers the following sports:
  • Alpine Skiing - Season: winter. Includes different levels of glide and slalom events. State competition offered in January in Paoli.
  • Aquatics - Seasons: spring, fall. Includes both individual and relay events for athletes of all ability levels. State competitions offered in June (individual) in Terre Haute and October (relays) in Indianapolis.
  • Athletics - Season: spring. Includes three levels and a variety of running and field events. State competition offered in June in Terre Haute.
  • Basketball - Seasons: fall, winter. Events include skills contest, three-on-three and five-a-side for traditional and Unified Sports Basketball teams. Three-on-three state competition offered in October in Indianapolis. Skills and five-a-side state competition offered in March in Terre Haute.
  • Bocce - Season: spring. A master sport for people 30 years of age and above. State competition offered in June in Terre Haute for team competition in traditional doubles, Unified Sports Bocce doubles and four-person teams.
  • Bowling - Season: fall. Includes ramp, individual, traditional and Unified Sports Bowling doubles, and Unified Sports Bowling four-person team events. State competition offered in June in Terre Haute for doubles and ramp/doubles events. State competition offered in December in Indianapolis in individual, traditional and Unified Sports Bowling events.
  • Cross-Country Skiing - Season: winter. Events include traditional and Unified Sports Cross Country Skiing pairs competition in 100, 200 and 300 meter races. State competition offered in January in Paoli.
  • Equestrian - New state event. State competition in September in Terre Haute.
  • Flag Football - Indiana is the only state in both the U.S. and the world to offer this sport. Season: fall. Competition offered for traditional and Unified Sports Flag Football teams. State competition offered in October in Indianapolis.
  • Golf - Season: summer. Includes a variety of events including skills competition, three-, six- and nine-hole individual golf and Unified Sports Golf pairs competition. State competition offered in August in Indianapolis.
  • Gymnastics - Offered by a few Local Programs.
  • Horseshoes - Season: spring. Includes singles, traditional doubles and Unified Sports Horseshoes doubles events. State competition offered in June in Terre Haute.
  • Ice-Skating - Season: winter. Includes Skills, Figure Skating and Speed Skating events. State competition offered in March in Indianapolis.
  • Motor Activities Training Program (MATP) - MATP is a non-competitive opportunity for athletes with lower abilities to work on improving motor skills. Season: fall. State competition offered in October in Indianapolis.
  • Play Activities - Children 5 to 7 years of age participate in this program that allows youth under the age of 8 the opportunity to train for future Special Olympics events. Currently offered in a few Local Programs.
  • Power Lifting - Season: fall. Included squat, bench, dead lift and combination events. State competition offered in October in Indianapolis.
  • Snowshoeing - Special Olympics Indiana's fastest-growing winter sport. Season: winter. Competition includes 50, 100 and 200 meter races. State competition offered in January in Paoli.
  • Soccer - Offered by a few Local Programs.
  • Softball - Season: summer. Includes skills, designated pitcher, traditional and Unified Sports Softball team events. State competition offered in August in Indianapolis.
  • Tennis - Season: spring. Offered by a few Local Programs and one area.
  • Volleyball - Season: spring. Includes traditional and Unified Sports Volleyball team events. State competition offered in June in Terre Haute.
