The Autism Society of North Carolina Summer Camp Program began in 1972. The first camping sessions served very few campers. As the demand for structured residential services has grown, so has the Summer Camp Program. In May of 1997, ASNC opened Camp Royall, a 133-acre camp facility in Chatham County, NC. Camp Royall was built to enable more campers to be served on an annual basis in an optimal setting. However, the demand for services still exceeds the number of campers that are able to be served annually at this facility. In 1998, ASNC began operating a satellite camp, known as Mountain Adventure, at Camp Christmount in Black Mountain, NC. In 2003, the ASNC Summer Camp Program served 396 individuals on the autism spectrum.
The Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC) Summer Camp Program is a residential summer camp for individuals with autism, ages 4 to adult. The summer camp program provides a week of typical camp activities, such as swimming, hiking, boating, and arts & crafts, in a structured environment. Campers are supervised closely at all times; many counselors are assigned only one camper per week to ensure maximum attention.
Campers are assigned to weeks according to age and ability. Each one-week session begins Sunday afternoon and ends Friday afternoon after the Camper Talent Show. There are specific weeks designed for very young campers and high functioning campers. To be eligible to attend, children must have a diagnosis of autism or related communication disorder and be a North Carolina resident.
