Located in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville, North Carolina, Camp Coqui (Co-KEY) offers campers with diabetes the opportunity to participate in a variety of fun, outdoor activities. In the process, they learn more about managing their diabetes-everything from testing blood sugar and administering insulin to choosing healthy snacks and getting daily exercise. Camp Coqu� is one of 3 camps for children with special medical needs administered by Mission Children's Hospital in Asheville, NC. Camp Coqu�: Provides an action-packed week of outdoor activities Teaches children and teens how to manage their diabetes while maintaining an active lifestyle Provides an opportunity to meet other young people with diabetes Promotes self-confidence and independence Camp Coqu� accepts 100 campers from ages 7-16. Campers are enrolled in one of two programs: Kid's Camp - for boys and girls ages 7-13 Teen Camp - for teens ages 14-16 The camper/counselor ratio is 4:1. Many of their counselor staff has diabetes. ACTIVITIES: Camp Coqu� activities include hiking, climbing tower, volleyball, swimming, field games, music, zip-line, boating, ropes course, campfires and arts and crafts. MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT: Camp Coqu� is a fully equipped health center, staffed around the clock. Diabetes care supplies are provided for each camper. THE STAFF Their medical staff includes physicians, registered nurses, registered dietitians, certified diabetes educators and social workers. Cabin counselors and camping professionals and activity specialists complete the staff. Each staff member is dedicated to making camp a safe and fun-filled week.
