Notes

Camp Aldersgate is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization of the State of Arkansas. It is accredited by the American Camping Association and licensed by the Arkansas Department of Human Services.

This camp has provided programs for children with special needs and senior citizens for over three decades. They are the oldest camp in Arkansas offering camps for children and youth who have conditions such as cancer, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, diabetes, arthritis, asthma, epilepsy, kidney disorders, autism, Down's syndrome, and intellectual disabilities.

Their year-round programs provide children, youth, and adults the chance to enjoy recreation and education on a forested site of 120 acres located in the heart of Little Rock, Arkansas. The camp is open year-round with summer week-long camps and weekend camps that are held throughout the year.

Camp Programs:

  • Summer Medical Camps
Camp Aldersgate provides summer camp for children with medical conditions, including muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, arthritis, cancer, epilepsy, asthma, kidney disorders, and diabetes. Camp Aldersgate provides the site, the staff, the program design and funding. The program works in partnership with local health agencies who recruit the campers, provide training, and partial funding. It also works with the organization, Med Camps of Arkansas, Inc., who provides the volunteer physicians and partial funding.

A typical week of camp includes an adapted ropes challenge course, archery, arts and crafts, fishing, canoeing/boating, swimming, and for the older campers, an introduction to SCUBA diving.

  • Respite Care
Throughout the year, Camp Aldersgate hosts weekend camps for children with disabilities. Funded in part by the Arkansas Department of Human Services and United Way, this program provides families of children with disabilities a rest, or "respite," from the demands of caregiving while the camper enjoys social interaction and fun activities at the camp.

  • Kota Camps
A new camp program for campers with disabilities, their brothers, sisters and friends!

These camps are named for the Quapaw Native American word for "friend." Campers with disabilities participate with their brothers, sisters, or friends in a summer week of camp or special weekend camps held throughout the year. Activities are the same as offered in the summer camps, but in addition, this program provides disability awareness and a better understanding of those with special needs.

  • Seniors Day Out
One of Camp Aldersgate's longest running programs!

Each Thursday, September through May, seniors come to Aldersgate to visit with friends, learn new skills, participate in arts and crafts, musical events and have a nutritional lunch.

Guest speakers provide educational and entertaining programs. Vans from CareLink, Inc. and Aldersgate provide transportation and are able to return participants to their homes by early afternoon.
