Description
  • Sharing outdoor adventure with everyone is our mission and our passion. WI offers a wide variety of canoe, sea kayak, dogsled, raft, horse pack and hiking trips throughout North America and the World.

These trips are fun, interesting, and, we think, a great value, but they are only part of our story. The unique thing about Wilderness Inquiry is that we make the outdoors accessible to everyone, including persons with disabilities. We hope to see you on the trail.

Notes

Group Trips
If your business, school, organization, interest group, family or friends want to Share the Adventure, Wilderness Inquiry can make it happen. Our trips accommodate people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, including people with disabilities. That means that no matter the make-up of your group, we can deliver a trip that surpasses expectations. Call 612-676-9400 for more information.

WI Outdoor Skills Workshops
WI offers opportunities to learn outdoor skills like canoeing, snowshoeing, and dogsledding in dozens of free public workshops conducted each year. We frequently provide workshops in conjunction with community celebrations as a way to introduce people to outdoor activities and recreation areas in their own backyard.

Family Programs
Outdoor recreation with WI is a meaningful way to share the great outdoors with your family. In addition to the family adventures highlighted in other parts of this site, WI educates families in outdoor recreation skills. Project FIT (Families Integrating Together) teaches families who have a member with a disability the skills they need to participate in outdoor recreation activities as a family unit. WI works with the PACER Center in Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota to conduct Project FIT.

Youth Trips
Each year Wilderness Inquiry offers regularly scheduled outdoor adventure trips for youth of all abilities ages 14-17. These trips take place in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ontario. We also do group trips for youth with cooperating organizations and schools--last fall, for example, we did a two-week trip to New Zealand with a middle school.

Adventure Leadership Program
In 2006 WI initiated a new youth leadership program to train tomorrows leaders in WIs style of inclusive, "servant" leadership. Teenagers of all abilities will come together at WI headquarters 2 3 times per month during the school year to learn various skills and leadership techniques. During the summer months these young leaders will plan and conduct three integrated outdoor adventures as a way to bring the skills they learned in to practical reality. Call 612-676-9400 for more information.

Beyond Special Populations
With support from the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation and other foundations we are working with Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and Girl Scouts of America (GSA) to provide training and support to help troop leaders become more successful at integrating youth with disabilities into their ongoing, regular programs and activities. Call 612-676-9400 for more information.

Gateway To Adventure
Gateway to Adventure is an innovative approach to ensuring that people with cognitive disabilities are fully included in integrated outdoor adventure experiences. This program provides participants with the opportunity to learn and practice the kinds of skills and behaviors typically needed to have a safe, enjoyable experience. WI is partnering with the University of Minnesota's Research and Training Center on Community Living, the Association of Residential Resources in Minnesota, and other key advocates of persons with cognitive disabilities to identify and involve eligible participants in the training and trips outlined.
