Program Overview: 52 million Americans have a disability and could benefit from physical activity. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is celebrating the 20th Anniversary in 2010. 20 years after the passage and many facilities are still not accessible. Exercise programming and facility design need to become more user-friendly and accessible to the entire community to continue to meet the demand from this large and growing population. This session will discuss marketing and facility design, including simple accommodations and staff training, as well as successful practices and strategic partnerships that all work toward increasing physical activity participation of people with disabilities, resulting in improved well-being and preventing or delaying chronic and secondary conditions.

Objectives:

  • To describe how to build the business case to make your facility and programming accessible to all, including marketing strategies to recruit individuals with disabilities.
  • To identify the ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) for Recreation Facilities as they relate to fitness facilities, providing useful assessment tools, and describing low (and high) cost adaptations.
  • Objective 3: To describe how to create (and join) strategic partnerships in fitness, sports, and recreation that encourage inclusive physical activity and fitness in the U.S.

Cost: $20 for CEPA members; $50 for non-CEPA members.
