Approaches for Healthy Lifestyles


A healthy lifestyle has a number of different components: physical, emotional, intellectual, occupational, and spiritual. Nutrition and physical activity are important parts to all of these components.  Consider the following suggestions to improve your dietary and physical activity habits.

Eating and Cooking:

  • Allow ample time for eating each meal
  • Do not feel pressure to hurry and finish
  • Cook meals at home but remember to take breaks
  • Find recipes that you can prepare while sitting down

Ideas for increasing physical activity:

Exercise is needed to increase strength, sharpen reflexes, and maintain balance. Increasing your physical activity may also improve cardiovascular health, bowel function and bladder function, decrease fatigue and depression, and improve attitude and mood. Below are some creative ways of exercising. Remember to start slowly.

  • Knit
  • Play miniature golf
  • Pull weeds in the garden
  • Go dancing
  • Take a walk
  • Yoga
  • Adaptive Tai Chi
  • Exercising in water
