Water Safety for Persons with Disabilities

Participating in activities on or near the water requires that a special effort is made to ensure that hazards have been reduced as much as possible. For people with disabilities, water safety holds the same importance - it just requires that special care be taken to assure all aspects of safety are addressed. Safety issues include:
  • Do you have an awareness of how comfortable you are on and/or near the water?
  • Are you aware of the best types of clothing worn for hot and cold temperatures?
  • Do you have an awareness of how to prevent hypothermia and hyperthermia?
  • Are you aware that there are different styles of life-jackets, each with a different purpose?
