Importance of Exercise

Because of the chronic and relapsing characteristics of multiple sclerosis, adherence to an exercise program for participants with multiple sclerosis can be difficult. Though exercise will not reverse or prevent demyelination, nor change the neurologic course of multiple sclerosis, it can support participants with multiple sclerosis in many other ways, including:

  • increased mood and well being
  • control of weight and decreased appetite
  • increased stamina, decreased fatigue
  • improved sleep (Britell, MD).

In addition to improving overall health, cardiovascular fitness, range of motion, and flexibility, exercise can help individuals:

  • increase energy
  • improve balance
  • manage spasticity
  • decrease muscle atrophy
  • better perform activities of daily living
