Rules for Working with a Person with a Mobility Disability
- If possible, put yourself at eye level with the person.
- Never patronize your client(s) by patting them on the head or shoulder.
- Do not assume that a client who uses a wheelchair wants to be pushed. Ask first.
- Offer assistance if the individual appears to be having difficulty opening the door.
- If you telephone your client, allow the phone to ring longer than usual to provide extra time for the client to reach the phone.
- Be patient. Allow your client to take as much time as necessary.
