NCHPAD - Building Healthy Inclusive Communities

All Abilities Team Pilot Program

From this alliance, materials were created to support and empower people with disabilities. The pilot was charged with planning, executing, and evaluating the entire event. The Breast Cancer 3-Day wanted to implement new initiatives to further allow persons with disabilities to safely participate and enjoy all aspects of the journey, from ceremonies to the route to the camp site. NCHPAD was pleased to work with an organization that places an emphasis on each individual's experience. The Breast Cancer 3-Day's philosophy on inclusion and diversity is not just a statement but is a reality! We celebrate their commitment to inclusion!

The planning process included creating training advice specific for people with disabilities in the participant handbook, creating content for Breast Cancer 3-Day coaching staff to assist individuals with disabilities in their safe preparation for the event, and creating an accessibility check list that addressed all aspects of accessibility in the built environment.

Synthetic surface along the pathway to the accessible tents was used to make the grassy terrain accessible.

For example, synthetic surfaces were used to make grassy terrain accessible at all of the pit stops and the camp site.

Perhaps one of the greatest contributions made was the training material on disability awareness that was disseminated to 375 crew and volunteers and 2,300 participants. The All Abilities Team created memories and changed perceptions that will last a lifetime!
