Organizations that Specialize in Integrated Outdoor Adventure

"We quickly learned that adaptations in the wilderness were similar to what is needed at home. Brad enjoyed paddling the canoe from a car seat that we placed in the canoe (Brad was not buckled in for boating safety) and he used his wheelchair for mobility at the campsites. The Wilderness Inquiry staff is very knowledgeable in disabilities and was helpful at all times."

When families, and especially families that include a person with disabilities, go on their first few outdoor adventures it is sometimes helpful to do so in a group with others. Outdoor recreation organizations provide a great way for families to get extra support and assistance as they begin trying outdoor recreation activities. Many of these organizations will have the necessary outdoor and adaptive equipment, experience in working with all ability levels, and knowledge about exciting place to visit. These organizations also may be helpful in answering questions or providing advice to families who are interested in planning their own outings. Here are a few sources to get you connected with family friendly programs.

Wilderness Inquiry is a national leader in providing integrated outdoor adventure, designing outdoor trips with the entire family in mind. Family adventures with Wilderness Inquiry could include multi-day canoeing, hiking, skiing, snow shoeing and dog sledding experiences to a number of places across the U.S. Family canoe and camping trips explore scenic areas in such places as Yellowstone National Park, Cumberland Island of the coast of Georgia, Northern Maine and various locations in Northern Minnesota.

See the following list for other organizations specializing in access to the outdoors for people with disabilities. Also refer to other NCHPAD fact sheets for information on specific recreational activities and resource organizations.

Through participation in outdoor activities, families can experience increased cohesiveness and heightened sense of confidence in their abilities. Planning is the key, and then just do it! It is important that all families find their own particular way to having fun and enjoyment for a rewarding return on their leisure time investment

"To take a trip where we can have such a wonderful time is an incredible gift - an amazing experience for my children, and a chance to do something that we could never do on our own."
