Strength Training

Important exercise terminology (reps, sets, determining the right weight) are explained in this section. Correct body positioning throughout the available range of motion, correct breathing, and posture are demonstrated. Safety considerations and options are shown, such as the use of latex-free equipment, a spotter when necessary, using safety straps, and locking the chair while exercising.

Strengthening, balance, and core exercises are performed using Thera-Bands and free weights. Prior to each exercise demonstration, graphics are provided to show participants what specific muscle groups are involved in each particular exercise. Alternative exercise options are provided for varying abilities. Most of the exercises are performed in a seated position, though some core exercises are performed on the floor. When necessary, safe transfers to a stable chair or to the floor from the wheelchair are demonstrated.
