A treadmill program of low intensity performed over 3.5 months elicits positive improvements in older adults with ID suffering from IC. These improvements will increase the quality of life of the person by decreasing their pain levels, improving their functional ability to perform their activities of daily living, and extending their independence.
Further research needs to be conducted regarding various ways (besides treadmills) for improving the aerobic capacity of persons with ID, especially those diagnosed with PVD. IC occurs more frequently in men; however, this study utilized more women then men, which supports the need for further research being conducted with more male subjects.
