Transferring is the method of moving a participant to another surface or object. When moving any participant, always encourage maximum independence when possible. It is also important to remember that what works for one individual might not work for the next one. Movers should understand what a disability's contraindications are before starting. Proper training in hydraulic and sling-type lifts should be completed prior to using them. Always consult your primary physician before starting any physical activity program. There are a few very important ground rules when transferring:
- Safety for participant and movers is always the primary concern.
- There should be only one person giving instruction while transferring.
- The participant should be aware of what will be happening and how it will happen.
- Always use good communication while performing the movements.
- Always lift with your legs, not your back.
- Avoid twisting while lifting.
- Keep weight close to your center of gravity.
- Use a wide base of support to ensure stability.
- Use extra care when using electric wheelchairs next to a pool.
