Notes

The Learning Camp is a unique summer camp that focuses on helping children with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and other learning challenges. They help to build self esteem and confidence that is needed to cope in the acedemic world. The Learning Camp offers five summer sessions which run from June through late August. Campers can attend either two week, three week or multiple sessions. Each session is limited to 35 campers or less, and maintains a staff to camper ratio of 1:3. They have an experienced staff of adults, most of whom are educational professionals, including many current or former teachers. They select counselors and teachers with an expertise in dealing with the issues associated with learning disabilities and learning challenges. Most of the staff members have worked with them for several summers and return year after year, just as the campers do. Each year, they also add new counselors and teachers to their camp family. All Learning Camp staff members are wilderness first aid and CPR trained and they have an on-call nurse and doctor.Unlike the regular school setting, campers practice fundamentals in small, intimate groups gathered outside under trees or on the shores of Spring Creek. Classes are organized according to age and academic needs. Children are not given after-class assignments and so there is no homework or additional testing. Instead, they focus on working very intensely on the basics a few hours each day, and then enjoy all the activities of any given day at summer camp. They incorporate many different types of instructional strategies.
