Focuses Include:

  • Auditory and Visual Processing
    Processing training provides students the opportunity to develop the visual and auditory processing skills of memory, perception, attention, and tracking ability.

  • Encoding/Decoding (Spelling/Reading Fluency)
    Using multi-sensory strategies, students learn and review the sound structure. Emphasis is on soundsymbol relationships, syllabication, and understanding roots, prefixes and suffixes.

  • Reading Comprehension
    Students improve their ability to understand what they read by creating graphic and written representations of the selection they are reading. Emphasis is on the main idea, key facts, and sequence of events. The teacher also reviews important vocabulary, and teaches critical thinking skills.

  • Written Language
    Writing is taught as a process. Students learn to generate their own ideas and plan their writing. Emphasis is on sentence structure and paragraph writing. For the older students, the writing process focuses on organizing ideas for expository writing.

  • Mathematics
    Students improve computation and reasoning skills. Emphasis is on the automaticity of basic math facts and the application of these facts to solve problems.

  • Organizational Skills
    Teachers encourage self-sufficiency and teach organization through notebook and backpack organization as well as student planners.
