Notes

Snowshoeing - Like tromping around in the peace and quiet of the woods in the winter? Love being outdoors but not sure you want to head to a busy ski area? Snowshoeing is the perfect opportunity to play outside. Based out of either of our locations, the Vermont woods have many trails and scenic routes available for a short hike or a long trek. Rentals are available and reservations are required.

Cross Country Skiing - If winters seem long and confining then cross country skiing may be the best way for you to shrug off cabin fever and enjoy the crisp, cold weather. Cross Country provides excellent aerobic exercise and balance development for stand up skiers and is probably one of the most vigorous cardiovascular exercises among winter sport. It's one of the healthiest recreational activities for the body and soul. Enjoying the beauty of nature while experiencing a total body workout.

Vermont Adaptive's current focus is on stand up cross country skiing but our goal in the next few years is to expand our inventory of sit down ski equipment to include cross country equipment. Stand up cross country skiing uses natural movements and requires little if any special equipment. It doesn't require great skill to get started and has a short learning curve.

This could be just the sport you've been looking for to share with the whole family. A family friendly activity, infants and toddlers can be carried in a backpack; it's a kinder, gentler sport on grandparents; mom and dad can try traditional skiing or skate skiing if they want to go fast. Even Fido is considered a family member at some areas on designated dog trails.

Dog Sledding - Have you ever dreamed of taking a ride on a dogsled or dog mushing? Have you ever see coverage of the iditarod and wondered what it might be like? Do you enjoy pristine wilderness as far as the eye can see, the thrill of abundant wildlife up close, mountain scenery but don't want to rough it too much? Then dog sledding might be the sport for you! Enjoy a short ride or daylong trek in the beauty of Vermont, seated in a comfortable Adaptive Dog Sled. Come just for the ride or learn all about running your own team and sled or take a peak into the world of competitive dog sledding.

Kids Ski Camp - This camp enables the participants to develop their personal snowsports skills as well as have fun skiing or snowboarding with peers and instructors. Our goals for this camp are to provide a fun way for kids to meet new friends and learn how to safely ski with their peers. Camp's focus is not only on skiing skills and introductory alpine racing techniques but also on valuable life skills such as safety in the outdoors and being active and healthy. It is a great opportunity for families to meet and share experiences. Vermont Adaptive rents an accessible ski lodge for campers and families to stay together. Space is limited to the first 20 people.

This two-day event is filled with on snow skill clinics, practice gate training, a pizza party, free skiing, coaching and a Sunday afternoon "Fun Race" and obstacle course to show off all the stuff learned over the weekend.

Participants: Vermont Adaptive clients between the ages of 8-16. Cost: TBD - (between $150 - $200 per person). Space is limited so make your reservations early. Discount accessible lodging may also be available.

DBVI Winter Carnival - Vermont Adaptive in collaboration with the Vermont Division for the Blind and Visually Impaired is proud to present our Second Annual Winter Carnival at Pico Mountain. Join us for this 2 1/2 day event held over Martin Luther King Weekend and experience some new challenges, make some new friends, get back out on the slopes and have a lot of fun! Activities include Downhill Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Snowshoeing, Rock Climbing, Snowmobiling and evening activities presented by the Division for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Event includes 2 nights lodging at the Rutland Holiday Inn, 2 days of activities with Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports, and a Banquet Saturday night.

Alpine Race Team - One goal of this team is to encourage team spirit and cooperation among disabled athletes while pursuing more advanced alpine skills through supportive competition. Another goal is to provide these athletes with the ability and motivation to pursue a focused goal. That goal could be to improve as an individual, expand their alpine skills or to be a valued member of an elite team. The team trains exclusively at our Sugarbush location every weekend and occasionally travels to other New England mountains for to participate in the "Diana Golden Series", a racing series in New England for the sole purpose of developing disabled athletes. The commitment to this team is great and only truly dedicated racers should apply.

Special Olympic Teams - Vermont Adaptive currently has two Alpine race teams that race exclusively in Special Olympics venues. One team is located at our Pico Mountain location and the other is based out of our Sugarbush Mount Ellen location. These teams train every Sunday from January until Late February anticipation of the Special Olympic Winter Games held in February or March. The emphasis of this training is improvement of personal skiing skills, race training, making new friends and FUN!
