Notes

Each year since 1978, Camp Korelitz has met the needs and interests of its campers, all of whom have diabetes (either type 1 or type 2).

Campers

Campers range in age from 9 to 15 years old. They are divided into 4 programming groups based on age. The groups include: 9-10 year olds, 11-12 year olds, 13-14 year olds, and 15 year olds. All four groups participate in activities that are appropriate for their ages.

Many campers feel that the best part of attending diabetes camp is meeting others with diabetes, especially others their own age. Quite often, diabetic children may be the only ones in their schools with diabetes. Many of these children feel as if they are alone, however, while attending camp, they form a strong bond with other campers and staff who have diabetes.

Activities

Daily activities for all campers include: swimming at the camp pool every afternoon, diet education classes, and medical education classes.

Campers participate in daily activities with their unit group, or with children their own age. The following activities are available for campers at Camp Campbell Gard:

  • Horseback riding
  • Nature classes
  • Canoeing on the Great Miami River
  • Canoeing on the camp lake
  • Group initiatives
  • Swimming
  • Fishing
  • Soccer
  • Arts and crafts
  • Softball
  • Climbing wall
  • Frisbee
  • Zip line
  • Slip 'n slide
  • Archery
  • Lacrosse

15 year olds are able to come to camp this year as Counselors-In-Training. During the first part of the camp week, this group will participate in an all-day canoe trip, leadership building activities, high ropes course activities and much more! During the second half of the week, this group will be assigned a different cabin group each day to assist the cabin's counselor in any way possible. This program is designed to prepare those interested in later becoming Junior Counselors and Counselors.

In the past, nightly activities for the entire camp have included:

  • Opening campfire
  • Evening swim
  • Carnival
  • Capture the flag
  • Spirit Wars
  • Hay Ride
  • Dance
  • Skit night
  • Shaving cream fight
  • Closing slide-show/awards ceremony
Staff

The Camp Director resides at camp during the week and is the connection between Camp Korelitz and the American Diabetes Association. The Executive Director of the American Diabetes Association also comes to camp and is the link between Camp Korelitz and the ADA.

Four unit leaders oversee Counselors, Junior Counselors and Counselors-In-Training for each age group.

Almost all Unit Leaders (ages 18+), Counselors (ages 18+), and Junior Counselors (ages 16-17) are diabetics themselves and previous campers. Typically, one Counselor and one Junior Counselor supervise a cabin group.

The medical staff, which includes medical interns, nurses, and doctors, are all trained at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati. 24-hour medical supervision is provided.

Registered dietitians and dietetic interns plan all meals and snacks at camp through carbohydrate counting and diet education classes.

The entire camp staff participates in training sessions which are the basis for leadership. A low camper to staff ratio (8:1) ensures proper care and supervision for each child.
