Notes

Special Populations Learning Outdoor Recreation and Education (SPLORE) provides adaptive cross-country ski equipment for participants with disabilities and provides instruction to meet the skill level of children and adults with special needs. Their programs give people with physical, mental, emotional, and/or financial barriers the opportunity to participate in life-enhancing outdoor recreation. The grant from REI allowed SPLORE to offer adaptive cross-country skiing at a significantly reduced cost to 70-100 individuals with disabilites and special needs that live on low or fixed incomes and reside in Salt Lake County.

All SPLORE programs are adapted as necessary to the individual abilities of our clients. SPLORE's intimate program settings allow sufficient staff interaction allowing each participant to maximize their potential in a safe and secure environment. Programs include:
  • CANOEING - All lessons and trips include canoeing equipment, trained instructors, environmental education, and meals for overnight trips. Participants provide their own personal gear, fishing gear, and transportation to and from canoeing sites. SPLORE offers half day and multi-day canoe trips.

  • CLIMBING - SPLORE's rock climbing lessons occur in various sites in the Cottonwood Canyons near Salt Lake City. Program participants must provide appropriate clothing. All lessons include instruction, and climbing equipment.

  • RAFTING - SPLORE has facilitated rafting adventures for over 5000 people of varying abilities since 1979. Beginning in 2005, SPLORE is joining with Holiday Expeditions of Salt Lake City to provide many of SPLORE's rafting trips. SPLORE continues to utilize over 100 volunteers annually in the rafting program. All SPLORE rafting trips are lead by Utah licensed river guides, and include volunteer support, pre-trip orientation meeting, meals, rafting equipment, and medical support as needed. Participants provide their own personal gear and transportation to and from either SPLORE's Moab office or the designated launch or take-out site. SPLORE also provides client transportation on selected trips. SPLORE provides all safety equipment, such as personal floatation devices. Join SPLORE for one to seven day adventures down the Colorado, Green and Yampa Rivers. Our rafting season runs from May through September.

  • WINTER FUN -
    • Dog Sledding: Explore the backcountry in Jackson, Wyoming in a unique and exciting way, by joining us on a dog sledding trip. Dog sledding trips are open to persons with physical or cognitive disabilities and are adapted to be accessible to all. Youll experience the ride of your life enjoying breathtaking scenery as you glide through fresh powder behind a powerful dog team.

    • Nordic Skiing: Daily or Overnight Trips - SPLORE will provide you with the resources to access local Nordic skiing opportunities in Northern Utah. Through our collaborative relationships with the National Ability Center, Common Ground Outdoor Adventures, and with our volunteer network, we can assist you in providing a Nordic ski trip to meet your needs. Additionally, SPLORE has skiing equipment which we will lend out on a case by case basis to interested parties.
