Notes

Camp Northwood is a residential summer program located in the Adirondacks of New York State. The program serves a population of socially immature, learning challenged, and high functioning autisitc children in need of individualization, structure, and social development. Camp Northwood specializes in helping children develop age appropriate social skills and independent living skills. A daily academic maintenance program assists campers with the retention of acadmic skill levels.

Our 2:1 camper/counselor ratio ensures a high degree of individualization as campers experience a traditional core of camping activities used as a vehicle for which we present our social skills curriculum. Many families choose the Northwood program because they seek a greater degree of supervision and support than is available in a more traditional camp setting. Low self-esteem, distractibility, delayed social development and poor organizational skills are just a few of the general characteristics shared by Northwood campers.

The Northwood program is designed to expose each camper to a wide variety of activities while at the same time providing a meaningful social experience. Exposure to social situations is a critical factor in social skill development. Camp Northwood uses each of our diverse activities as vehicles for which we can address social skill development. Immediate positive feedback or redirection for inappropriate actions enables our campers to experience continual social skill guidance in an activated learning environment.

Activities

Northwood campers are exposed to a wide variety of traditional non-competitive summer camp activities. While our campers are learning specific skills related to each of our activities, they are also provided with counselor support enabling them to learning how to more effectively participate in group activities.

Three of Camp Northwood's four daily activity periods are pre-scheduled so that campers are able to participate in a cross-section of activities with their bunkmates. Once per day campers participate in a "Choice Period". This elective is selected once per week and allows for campers to experience a greater depth of instruction in a favorite activity area.

Our extensive facilities provide ample space for individualized instruction and activity regardless of the weather conditions. In addition to our numerous activity labs, Camp Northwood features a full size indoor gymnasium as well as a large theater in which we produce an annual musical that is presented to our parents on Parents' Visiting Day.
